How to Verify a Behavior Analyst Certification (BCBA / BCaBA)
Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) design and oversee applied behavior analysis (ABA) programs. The BCBA and BCaBA credentials are issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). Here is how to verify them.
Quick answer
Verify BCBA and BCaBA credentials through the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) certificant registry at bacb.com. Search by name to confirm active certification status, certificate number, and expiration date. Also verify state licensure where required.
BACB credential tiers
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) issues four primary credentials:
- BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst): Master's degree or higher in behavior analysis or a related field, required coursework, supervised fieldwork hours, and passage of the BCBA examination. BCBAs independently design, implement, and supervise ABA programs.
- BCBA-D (BCBA-Doctoral): Doctoral-level BCBA. Verifiable through the same BACB registry — confirmed by the “-D” suffix on the certificate.
- BCaBA (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst): Bachelor's degree-level credential. BCaBAs implement ABA programs under BCBA supervision and cannot independently supervise others.
- RBT (Registered Behavior Technician): Entry-level paraprofessional credential. RBTs implement services under BCBA or BCaBA supervision. Also verifiable through BACB.
For positions requiring independent clinical responsibility or program design, only the BCBA (or BCBA-D) qualifies. BCaBA and RBT credentials require ongoing supervision.
How to verify BACB credentials
BACB maintains a free public certificant registry:
- Go to bacb.com
- Navigate to “Certificant Registry” or the credential lookup tool
- Search by first name, last name, and certificate number (if available)
- Confirm: credential level (BCBA, BCBA-D, BCaBA, or RBT), Active status, and expiration date
- Check for any disciplinary actions listed in the BACB registry
BACB publishes disciplinary records
The BACB publicizes disciplinary actions including suspensions and revocations. Always check the disciplinary section of the registry entry, not just the active/expired status. A practitioner may hold an active credential but also have a public sanction on record.
BCBA certifications expire every two years. BCaBA certifications also expire on a 2-year cycle. RBT certifications expire annually. All require continuing education for renewal.
State licensure for behavior analysts
Most U.S. states now license behavior analysts separately, typically using the BCBA as the basis for licensure. Common state license titles include Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA), Licensed Applied Behavior Analyst (LABA), or Licensed Board Certified Behavior Analyst (LBCBA).
State licensure is issued by the state health professions board or a dedicated behavior analyst licensing board. Verify the state license separately from the BACB certification — holding a BCBA does not automatically confer a state license in most jurisdictions.
The Autism Society and BACB's regulatory resources page list states with enacted behavior analyst licensing laws. For Medicaid billing, state licensure is typically required as a condition of payment.
Supervision requirements
BCaBAs must be supervised by a BCBA or BCBA-D. RBTs must be supervised by a BCBA, BCBA-D, or BCaBA. The BACB has specific requirements for supervision ratios and documentation. When hiring BCaBAs or RBTs, verify that a supervising BCBA is identified and credentialed.
Medicaid-funded ABA programs typically require that program design and supervision be performed by a BCBA or BCBA-D. BCaBAs and RBTs alone cannot fulfill program oversight requirements in most insurance contexts.
Red flags
- Name not found in BACB certificant registry at bacb.com
- Expired BCBA or BCaBA certification (2-year cycle)
- Disciplinary action, suspension, or revocation in BACB registry
- BCaBA or RBT presented as qualified for independent BCBA-level responsibilities
- No state license in a state requiring behavior analyst licensure
- No supervising BCBA identified for BCaBA or RBT positions
- Degree from a non-ABAI-accredited or non-verified behavior analysis program
Verification checklist
- 1. Verify BCBA/BCaBA/RBT at bacb.com certificant registry — confirm Active status and expiration
- 2. Check BACB registry for any disciplinary actions or sanctions
- 3. Confirm credential level matches the role (BCBA for supervisory/design roles)
- 4. Verify state behavior analyst license with the state licensing board
- 5. For BCaBA and RBT positions, confirm supervising BCBA credentials are active
- 6. For Medicaid billing, confirm state licensure and supervision structure meets payer requirements
Verify behavior analysis program accreditation
BCBA candidates must complete an ABAI-accredited or verified behavior analysis program. Use VerifyED to confirm whether a school's program is legitimate and meets BACB educational requirements.
