Cardiovascular technology is divided into subspecialties — echocardiography, vascular technology, cardiac electrophysiology, and invasive cardiology — each with distinct credentialing pathways. Two primary bodies issue these credentials:

State licensure considerations

Most states do not license cardiovascular technologists separately. However, some states regulate sonographers or vascular technologists under broader health professions licensing frameworks. California, New Mexico, Oregon, and a few others have enacted limited diagnostic imaging or cardiovascular technology licensing.

For most clinical settings, the CCI or ARDMS credential combined with JCAHO/ Joint Commission compliance requirements is the operative standard. Confirm employer requirements and state-specific rules for the practice state.

Red flags

• Credential not found in CCI or ARDMS verification lookup
• Expired credential — most CCI and ARDMS credentials renew on 3-year cycles
• Credential subspecialty does not match the procedure type (e.g., adult echo credential for congenital studies)
• CCT (basic EKG) presented as equivalent to RCS or RDCS for echocardiography roles
• No credential at all for invasive cardiology or EP lab positions
