Quick answer

Verify the CTP credential through the AFP credential verification page at afponline.org/credentials/ctp. AFP provides a search tool to look up active CTP holders by name. AFP also issues Credly digital badges for current credential holders.

What is the CTP?

The CTP (formerly known as the CCM — Certified Cash Manager) is issued by the Association for Financial Professionals (AFP), the professional association for treasury and finance practitioners. It is the most recognized treasury credential in the United States and is widely known in Canada and internationally.

CTP holders typically work in roles such as treasurer, assistant treasurer, cash manager, director of treasury operations, or treasury analyst at mid-to-large corporations, financial institutions, and government entities.

How to verify the CTP credential

AFP maintains a verification tool for active CTP holders:

  1. Go to afponline.org/credentials/ctp
  2. Click the credential verification link or search tool on the page
  3. Enter the candidate's first and last name
  4. Confirm the CTP is listed as active and the name matches

CTP holders may also share a Credly digital badge. Verify the badge is live, issued by AFP, and not expired or revoked.

CTP requires active AFP membership and renewal

The CTP must be renewed every three years through continuing professional education. A holder who has not renewed will not appear as active in the AFP directory. Lapsed CTP status is not uncommon — always confirm currency with the verification tool.

CTP eligibility and exam requirements

The CTP exam covers six domains tested in a single 170-question exam administered in computer-based testing centers:

  • Cash and liquidity management
  • Capital markets and funding
  • Treasury operations and controls
  • Risk management
  • Working capital management
  • Relationship management and technology

Eligibility requires either two years of relevant treasury or finance experience, or a combination of education and experience. The CTP exam window opens twice per year (spring and fall).

Renewal requirements

The CTP must be renewed every three years:

  • 36 continuing professional education (CPE) credits required per 3-year period
  • CPE can be earned through AFP annual conference, AFP webinars, accredited treasury training programs, and other approved sources
  • An annual AFP membership fee is not required to hold the CTP, but non-members pay higher renewal fees

CTP vs. other finance credentials

Credential Issuer Focus Renewal
CTP AFP Corporate treasury, cash management, capital markets 36 CPE / 3 years
CFA CFA Institute Investment analysis, portfolio management Annual membership
CPA State boards / AICPA Accounting, audit, tax State-specific CPE
CMA IMA Management accounting, financial decision-making 30 CPE / year
CCM (legacy) AFP Predecessor to CTP; retired 2012; not equivalent to current CTP N/A — retired

The CTP is the primary credential for treasury operations roles. The CFA is more common in investment and asset management. Many senior treasury officers hold both a CTP and a CPA, combining operational treasury expertise with accounting depth.

Red flags

  • Name not found in AFP's active CTP directory — may indicate lapsed renewal or credential never earned
  • Candidate claims “CCM” (retired legacy credential) as equivalent to the current CTP — they are related but distinct
  • Credly badge expired or revoked
  • Credential date claimed significantly predates realistic career experience (CTP requires two years of treasury/finance experience)

Verification checklist

  • 1. Search the AFP CTP verification tool at afponline.org/credentials/ctp
  • 2. Confirm the candidate's name appears and the credential is listed as active
  • 3. Optionally verify a Credly badge: confirm issuer is AFP and badge is not expired
  • 4. Distinguish CTP from the retired CCM credential if relevant to the role

Verify the treasury candidate's educational background

Treasury professionals typically hold finance, accounting, or business degrees. Use VerifyED to confirm whether the degree-granting institution is properly accredited.
