IT Certification Verification
How to Verify a CompTIA CASP+ Certification
CompTIA CASP+ (CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner) is one of the few vendor-neutral, practitioner-level cybersecurity certifications that satisfies DoD 8140 requirements at the IAT Level III tier. Here's how to verify it.
Quick answer
Verify CASP+ credentials through the CompTIA certification verification portal at verify.comptia.org. Search by the candidate's name or their CompTIA verification code. The portal shows current status, certification date, and expiration (CASP+ uses the CE continuing education model with a 3-year cycle).
What is CASP+?
CASP+ (CAS-004 is the current exam code) targets senior security practitioners with at least 10 years of IT experience, including 5 in hands-on security. It covers enterprise security architecture, risk management, research and collaboration, and integration of enterprise security.
Unlike CISSP, which emphasizes management and policy, CASP+ is designed for practitioners who implement and architect security controls rather than manage security programs. CompTIA positions it as complementary to — not a replacement for — CISSP.
DoD 8140 significance
CASP+ satisfies DoD 8140 (formerly 8570) requirements for IAT Level III and IASAE Level I and II positions. For federal contractors and defense-sector hiring, this is a critical distinction — it allows candidates to work on classified or sensitive systems without an additional management-level certification.
How to verify at verify.comptia.org
- Go to verify.comptia.org
- Enter the candidate's first name, last name, and email, or their CompTIA verification code (provided on their certificate or transcript)
- Results display all active CompTIA certifications for that individual, including CASP+
- Confirm the certification name, issue date, and expiration date
- Active status means the CE cycle is current — look for “Active” not “Expired” or “Revoked”
CE renewal requirements
CASP+ follows CompTIA's Continuing Education (CE) program:
- Certification is valid for 3 years from the date of passing
- Renewal requires earning 75 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) within the 3-year period
- Alternatively, candidates can renew by retaking the current CASP+ exam
- CEUs can come from training, conferences, publishing, teaching, or passing other exams
- CASP+ renewal also automatically renews lower-level CompTIA certs (Security+, CySA+, PenTest+)
A candidate with an expired CASP+ may still hold a valid CISSP or other security credential — always check the specific cert being claimed.
CASP+ vs. related security certifications
| Credential | Issuer | Focus | DoD 8140 |
|---|---|---|---|
| CASP+ | CompTIA | Advanced practitioner, architecture | IAT Level III, IASAE I/II |
| CISSP | ISC² | Security management, policy | IAT Level III, IASAE I/II/III |
| CISM | ISACA | Security management | IAT Level III |
| Security+ | CompTIA | Security fundamentals | IAT Level II |
Red flags
- Not found on verify.comptia.org by name — ask for their CompTIA verification code directly
- Status shows “Expired” — CASP+ has a 3-year CE cycle; an expired cert cannot be claimed as current
- Candidate lists “CAS-002” or “CAS-003” — older exam versions; verify the cert is still within its 3-year window and has been renewed
- Confusion between CASP+ and CSSP (Certified Systems Security Professional) — different credentials, different issuers
- Claimed DoD 8140 IAT Level III eligibility from CASP+ for a position requiring IASAE Level III — CASP+ does not satisfy IASAE Level III (CISSP does)
Verification checklist
- 1. Verify at verify.comptia.org by name or verification code
- 2. Confirm status is “Active” — not expired
- 3. Check the exam code shown (current is CAS-004)
- 4. For DoD roles: confirm CASP+ satisfies the specific 8140 requirement for the position
- 5. Expiration is 3 years from issue date — verify the date math if status is borderline
Verify the cybersecurity degree or bootcamp
Senior security candidates often hold degrees in computer science, information security, or related fields. Use VerifyED to confirm whether their institution is properly accredited.
