How to Verify a Correctional Officer Certification
Correctional officer (CO) certification is governed by state departments of corrections and, in many states, the same POST commission that certifies police officers. Verification requires checking both state-level training records and any decertification history across prior states of employment.
Quick answer
Verify correctional officer certification through the state department of corrections or the state POST commission (where corrections officers fall under POST standards). For decertification history, check the National Decertification Index (NDI) at ndipublicsafety.com. The American Jail Association (AJA) offers voluntary credentials but these are separate from state licensure.
Who oversees correctional officer certification?
Unlike police officer certification, which is uniformly controlled by state POST commissions, correctional officer certification is divided between two types of agencies depending on the state:
| Structure | Certifying Body | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| POST-integrated states | State POST commission certifies COs under the same framework as police | California, Florida, Georgia, Texas |
| DOC-controlled states | State Department of Corrections manages its own academy and certification | New York (DOCCS), Pennsylvania (DOC), Illinois (IDOC) |
| County/local jail staff | County sheriff or local POST; requirements vary significantly | Most states with county-operated jails |
Before verifying, determine whether the candidate worked in a state prison system (DOC) or a county jail, as the certifying body and verification path differs.
State verification portals
Selected state resources for correctional officer certification verification:
- California: CA POST (post.ca.gov) covers correctional peace officers at state prisons. County jail officers: county sheriff or local POST.
- Florida: CJSTC (fdle.state.fl.us) certifies correctional officers under the same framework as law enforcement. ATMS Licensee Search is publicly accessible.
- Texas: TCOLE (tcole.texas.gov) covers corrections officers employed by TDCJ and county jails. License Verification portal available.
- Georgia: GA POST (gapost.org) certifies correctional officers. Officer Search portal available.
- New York: DOCCS (doccs.ny.gov) operates its own academy; contact Human Resources for employment and training verification. County jail officers through DCJS.
- Illinois: IDOC (illinois.gov/idoc) — contact directly for CO training verification. County officers: ILETSB (ptb.illinois.gov).
- Pennsylvania: PA DOC — contact Office of Human Resources for training records. County officers: MPOETC (mpoetc.psp.pa.gov).
National Decertification Index (NDI)
The NDI (ndipublicsafety.com), maintained by IADLEST, aggregates decertification actions from participating state agencies including corrections-specific boards. Not all states report corrections decertifications separately from law enforcement decertifications.
Search by the candidate's full legal name. A match will display the state, date, and reason for decertification. Common grounds for CO decertification include:
- Criminal conviction (felony or disqualifying misdemeanor)
- Sexual misconduct or inmate abuse
- Smuggling contraband (drugs, phones, weapons) into a facility
- Excessive or unlawful use of force
- Dishonesty, falsification of records, or false statements
- Failure to complete required training
AJA and ACA voluntary credentials
Two national organizations offer voluntary professional credentials for corrections staff. These are not state certifications and do not substitute for state licensure, but may appear on a candidate's resume:
| Credential | Issuer | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| Certified Jail Manager (CJM) | American Jail Association (AJA) — americanjail.org | Contact AJA directly; no public online lookup |
| Certified Corrections Professional (CCP) | American Correctional Association (ACA) — aca.org | Contact ACA credentialing department |
Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP)
Correctional officers employed by the Federal Bureau of Prisons are federal employees, not state-certified officers. BOP does not issue a state-style certification. Employment history with BOP can be verified through:
- Standard employment verification (payroll records, W-2s, HR letter)
- OPM eOPF (electronic Official Personnel Folder) for current or recent federal employees
- The NDI does not typically list BOP decertification actions
Verification checklist
- 1. Determine whether the candidate worked in a state prison, county jail, or federal facility
- 2. Identify the certifying body in each state — POST commission or DOC — and use the appropriate portal or contact
- 3. Check the National Decertification Index at ndipublicsafety.com for all prior states of employment
- 4. Confirm training completion records (academy graduation, in-service training hours) meet current requirements
- 5. Verify any voluntary credentials (CJM, CCP) directly with AJA or ACA
- 6. Contact prior employing agencies directly; some misconduct findings are held by the facility rather than the state board
Verify correctional staff education credentials
Many corrections leadership positions require a degree in criminal justice, social work, or a related field. Use VerifyED to confirm that the awarding institution was properly accredited and is not a diploma mill issuing fraudulent degrees.
