What is the CPWA?

The Certified Private Wealth Advisor (CPWA) is designed for financial advisors working with ultra-high-net-worth individuals — typically clients with $5M+ in investable assets. It focuses on advanced planning strategies: tax optimization, estate planning, concentrated positions, alternative investments, and behavioral finance.

Earning the CPWA requires:

How to verify a CPWA designation

CPWA vs. CIMA: understanding the difference

Both credentials are issued by the Investments & Wealth Institute and are frequently confused. They serve different roles:

A job posting requiring a CPWA is looking for a comprehensive private wealth planning skillset. A candidate presenting a CIMA does not satisfy a CPWA requirement — they are parallel credentials, not interchangeable.

Additional verification for financial advisors

For any financial advisor role, verify the CPWA in conjunction with:

• › FINRA BrokerCheck (brokercheck.finra.org): Confirms broker registration, employment history, and any disclosures (customer complaints, regulatory actions, criminal events).
• › SEC IAPD (adviserinfo.sec.gov): For RIAs — shows registration status, assets under management, Form ADV disclosures, and disciplinary history.
• › State securities regulator: Some advisors are registered at the state level rather than the SEC. NASAA's IARD system feeds into IAPD for state-registered advisors.

Is the CPWA recognized by FINRA?
