  4. Check the expiration date — dbt certifications expire and require renewal

If the candidate does not have a Credly badge link, they can retrieve it from their Credly account at credly.com or from the dbt Learn platform where certifications are managed.

dbt Core vs. dbt Cloud

The dbt certification covers both dbt Core (open-source) and dbt Cloud (managed service). When evaluating candidates:

  • dbt Core: Self-hosted open-source version; requires CLI proficiency and orchestration via Airflow, Prefect, or similar
  • dbt Cloud: Managed platform with IDE, scheduler, and observability built in; the dbt certification covers Cloud-specific features including jobs and environments

Confirm whether the role requires dbt Core expertise, dbt Cloud administration, or both. The certification covers fundamentals that apply to both, but hands-on experience in each environment is separate.

Red flags

  • No Credly badge link available for the claimed dbt certification
  • Credly badge is expired — dbt certifications require renewal
  • Badge issuer is not dbt Labs — could indicate a different vendor's certification
  • Candidate lists dbt experience without any formal certification when the role requires verified dbt expertise

Verification checklist
