How to Verify a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) Credential

The Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR) is a nationally recognized credential issued by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR), the credentialing body of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. CDR maintains a public credential verification tool for both DTRs and Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs).

Quick answer

Verify DTR credentials through the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credential verification tool at cdrnet.org. Enter the practitioner's name or registration number and confirm the credential type (DTR vs. RDN), active registration status, and registration expiration date.

What is a Dietetic Technician, Registered?

A DTR is a nutrition and dietetics practitioner who has completed an ACEND-accredited dietetic technician program, a supervised practice component, and passed the CDR registration examination. DTRs work alongside Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) in hospitals, long-term care facilities, school food service, community nutrition programs, and clinical settings.

The DTR credential is separate from and subordinate to the RDN. A DTR is not an RDN, and cannot practice independently in roles that require an RDN. Verifying the correct credential type is essential for compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, and state dietetics licensure laws.

CDR credential verification

The Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) is the sole national credentialing body for DTRs and RDNs. CDR maintains a publicly searchable credential registry.

How to verify a DTR credential

  1. Go to cdrnet.org → “Verify a Credential”
  2. Search by registrant name or CDR registration number
  3. Confirm: credential type (DTR), registration status (Active / Inactive / Suspended), and registration renewal date

DTR vs. RDN

Some candidates may claim “registered dietitian” status when they hold only a DTR. The CDR verification result clearly states the credential type. Always confirm whether the role requires an RDN and whether the credential returned matches that requirement.

ACEND program accreditation

To be eligible for the CDR DTR examination, candidates must complete an ACEND-accredited Dietetic Technician program. ACEND (Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics) is the specialized accreditor for nutrition and dietetics education, operating under the umbrella of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Verify program accreditation at: eatright.org/acend → Program Finder. Select “Dietetic Technician” program type.

ACEND accreditation is required for CDR exam eligibility. If a candidate claims a DTR credential but graduated from a non-ACEND program, that is a red flag warranting further investigation.

State dietetics licensure

In addition to the CDR credential, many states regulate dietetics practice through state licensure or certification laws. State requirements for DTRs vary:

Regulatory Type Description Examples
Licensure states State license required to practice dietetics; DTRs may have a separate or lower-level license than RDNs Florida (LD), Texas (LD), California (RD, not DTR-specific)
Certification states State certification restricts the title “dietitian” but does not fully regulate practice Several states with title protection laws
Unregulated states No state license required; CDR credential is the only credential A few states

Check whether the state where the DTR will practice requires a state license in addition to the CDR registration. Contact the state dietetics board or health professions licensing agency for the current requirements.

CDR continuing professional education

DTRs must complete continuing professional education (CPE) requirements to maintain CDR registration. CDR operates on a 5-year credentialing cycle for DTRs. Registration renewal requires completion of a minimum number of CPE hours and a Professional Development Portfolio (PDP) submitted to CDR.

The CDR verification result includes the registration expiration date. If the credential is within 30–60 days of expiration or shows “Inactive” status, confirm with the candidate that renewal is in progress.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Verify CDR credential at cdrnet.org; confirm the credential type is DTR (not RDN), status is Active, and note expiration date
  • 2. Confirm the role requires a DTR (not an RDN); if RDN is required, verify the candidate holds that credential instead
  • 3. Verify that the candidate's dietetic technician program was ACEND-accredited at time of graduation
  • 4. Check whether the state of practice requires a state dietetics license in addition to the CDR credential
  • 5. For CMS-regulated facilities: confirm the credential satisfies Medicare/Medicaid dietary services staffing requirements

Verify dietetics program accreditation

Use VerifyED to confirm that the college or university where the DTR completed their associate's degree or dietetic technician program holds appropriate regional accreditation and is not a diploma mill or unaccredited institution.
