How to Verify a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) Certification
The FRM (Financial Risk Manager) is the global standard certification for financial risk professionals. Awarded by GARP (Global Association of Risk Professionals), it validates expertise in market risk, credit risk, operational risk, and risk management best practices. Here is how to verify it.
Quick answer
Verify FRM certification through GARP at garp.org. GARP maintains a public directory of FRM certified professionals. Search by name to confirm the FRM designation is active. Note that candidates must also complete 2 years of relevant work experience after passing exams before the FRM is formally awarded.
What the FRM covers
The FRM designation certifies expertise in:
- Quantitative analysis: statistics, probability, regression
- Financial markets and products: equities, fixed income, derivatives
- Valuation and risk models: VaR, stress testing, scenario analysis
- Market risk, credit risk, and operational risk measurement
- Risk management and investment management frameworks
- Liquidity risk and counterparty credit risk
FRM holders work as risk managers, risk analysts, quantitative analysts, and chief risk officers at banks, hedge funds, asset managers, regulators, and corporate treasury functions.
FRM exam structure and requirements
The FRM program requires two parts plus work experience:
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| FRM Part I | Foundations of risk management, quantitative analysis, financial markets and products, valuation and risk models |
| FRM Part II | Market risk, credit risk, operational risk, liquidity risk, risk management in investment management, current issues |
| Work experience | 2 years of relevant professional experience in financial risk management; must be submitted to GARP within 5 years of passing Part II |
Exam pass ≠ FRM designation
Passing both FRM exam parts does not automatically confer the FRM designation. The candidate must also submit 2 years of qualifying work experience to GARP. A candidate who has passed the exams but has not submitted experience is not yet an FRM. Confirm designation status via the GARP directory, not just exam pass status.
How to verify via GARP
- Go to garp.org
- Navigate to the FRM Certified Professionals directory
- Search by the individual's name
- Confirm the FRM designation is listed and active
GARP also offers the SCRLM (Sustainability and Climate Risk) credential. This is a separate credential from the FRM — confirm which designation was claimed.
FRM continuing education
FRM certified professionals are expected to maintain their knowledge through GARP's Continuing Professional Development (CPD) program. While CPD requirements are not as strictly enforced as some other credentials (the FRM does not automatically expire), GARP recommends ongoing professional development.
FRM vs. related risk credentials
| Credential | Body | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| FRM (Financial Risk Manager) | GARP | Financial risk; global standard; bank/buy-side focused |
| PRM (Professional Risk Manager) | PRMIA | Financial risk; FRM competitor; four-part exam |
| CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) | CFA Institute | Investment management; broader than FRM; includes equity/fixed income |
| CMT (Chartered Market Technician) | CMT Association | Technical analysis; different from quantitative risk focus |
Verification checklist
- 1. Verify FRM designation in the GARP certified professionals directory at garp.org
- 2. Confirm the designation is Active (not just that exams were passed)
- 3. Confirm 2 years of qualifying experience has been verified by GARP if the designation is recent
- 4. Distinguish FRM from SCRLM or from PRM (PRMIA) — these are different credentials
Verify finance program accreditation
FRM candidates typically hold degrees from accredited finance, economics, or mathematics programs. Use VerifyED to confirm whether a school's program is properly accredited.
