Professional Certification Verification
How to Verify an HR Professional Certification (PHR / SPHR / SHRM-CP)
HR professionals hold certifications from two primary bodies: HRCI and SHRM. Both maintain public verification tools, but the credentials are not equivalent. Here is how to verify them correctly.
Quick answer
For HRCI credentials (PHR, SPHR, GPHR), verify at hrci.org using the certification verification tool. For SHRM credentials (SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP), verify at shrm.org using the credential verification portal. Both credentials require 3-year renewal cycles.
HRCI credentials
The HR Certification Institute (HRCI) issues the original professional HR certifications, which have existed since 1976. HRCI credentials are experience- and examination-based and focus on HR functional knowledge.
- PHR (Professional in Human Resources): Entry-to-mid-level HR credential. Requires qualifying work experience and passage of the PHR exam. Operational and tactical HR focus.
- SPHR (Senior Professional in Human Resources): Senior-level credential for HR leaders. Requires significant HR experience and passage of the SPHR exam. Strategic HR focus.
- GPHR (Global Professional in Human Resources): Specialty credential for multinational HR professionals. Covers global HR strategies, cross-border employment, and international assignment management.
- PHRca (PHR — California): California-specific add-on covering state employment law distinctions. Paired with PHR.
- aPHR (Associate Professional in Human Resources): Entry-level credential for those new to HR, with no experience requirement.
To verify HRCI credentials:
- Go to hrci.org
- Navigate to “Verify a Certification”
- Search by the professional's name
- Confirm: credential type, Active status, and expiration date
SHRM credentials
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) launched its own competing credential program in 2015. SHRM credentials emphasize behavioral competencies alongside HR knowledge.
- SHRM-CP (SHRM Certified Professional): For HR professionals in operational roles. Requires qualifying experience or education plus passage of the SHRM-CP exam.
- SHRM-SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional): For senior HR leaders with strategic responsibilities. Requires significant experience and passage of the SHRM-SCP exam.
To verify SHRM credentials:
- Go to shrm.org
- Navigate to the credential verification portal
- Search by name or SHRM member ID
- Confirm: credential type (SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP), Active status, and expiration
HRCI vs. SHRM — not the same
HRCI and SHRM are separate organizations with separate certifications. A PHR and a SHRM-CP are both respected HR credentials but are issued by different bodies and have different exam content. Do not treat one as a substitute for the other when a job posting specifies a particular certification. Verify whichever is claimed through the correct registry.
Renewal requirements
Both HRCI and SHRM credentials expire on 3-year cycles and require recertification credits (60 credits for HRCI; 60 PDCs for SHRM) or re-examination. An expired credential means the professional has not maintained the certification.
Expiration does not necessarily indicate misconduct — many experienced HR professionals let credentials lapse after leaving roles where the certification was required. However, for roles where current certification is a stated requirement, verify that the credential is actively maintained.
Red flags
- Claimed HRCI or SHRM credential not found in the issuing body's verification tool
- Expired credential undisclosed when active certification is a role requirement
- Credential level mismatch — PHR presented for an SPHR-required senior role
- Degree from a non-regionally-accredited institution for HR management education
- Multiple undisclosed credential lapses in employment history
Verification checklist
- 1. Identify which credential is claimed — HRCI (PHR/SPHR/GPHR) or SHRM (SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP)
- 2. For HRCI credentials, verify at hrci.org — confirm Active status and expiration
- 3. For SHRM credentials, verify at shrm.org — confirm Active status and expiration
- 4. Confirm credential level matches the seniority of the role
- 5. Verify educational institution is regionally accredited (not a diploma mill)
Verify HR program accreditation
HR degree programs vary widely in quality. Use VerifyED to confirm whether a school's HR or business program is regionally accredited and free from diploma mill associations.
