How to Verify a Nuclear Medicine Technologist Credential

Nuclear medicine technologists are credentialed by two national organizations — ARRT and NMTCB — and most states require a radiologic technology or nuclear medicine-specific license. Here is how to verify nuclear medicine technologist credentials accurately.

Quick answer

The two recognized nuclear medicine technologist credentials are R.T.(N) from ARRT and CNMT (Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist) from NMTCB. Verify ARRT at arrt.org and NMTCB at nmtcb.org. Most states also require a state radiologic technology or nuclear medicine license — verify in the applicable state licensing portal.

ARRT nuclear medicine credential

The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) offers the R.T.(N) credential — Registered Technologist in Nuclear Medicine. Like other ARRT primary credentials, R.T.(N) can be the primary credential entered through nuclear medicine-specific training without requiring a prior radiography credential.

ARRT also offers a post-primary specialty in Nuclear Medicine Technology for radiographers who add nuclear medicine to their practice scope: R.T.(R)(N).

Verify ARRT credentials at: arrt.org → Verify Credentials. The portal confirms all ARRT credentials held, Active/Inactive status, and current renewal cycle standing.

NMTCB CNMT credential verification

The Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) administers the CNMT (Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist) examination. NMTCB also offers specialty credentials in PET and NCT (nuclear cardiology).

NMTCB credentials include:

  • CNMT: Certified Nuclear Medicine Technologist (primary credential)
  • PET: PET specialty credential (added to CNMT for PET/CT imaging)
  • NCT: Nuclear Cardiology Technologist specialty credential

Verify NMTCB credentials at: nmtcb.org → Verify a Credential. The portal confirms CNMT status, any specialty credentials, and current certification period.

PET/CT specialization

PET/CT imaging requires both nuclear medicine and CT competencies. For roles that include PET/CT, verify that the technologist holds:

  • A current nuclear medicine credential (ARRT R.T.(N) or NMTCB CNMT) for the PET component
  • An ARRT CT credential (R.T.(CT)) for the CT component, or facility-confirmed CT training
  • Or an NMTCB PET specialty credential

State licensing requirements

Most states that license radiologic technologists include nuclear medicine technologists under those licensing requirements. Nuclear medicine technologists may also fall under radioactive materials regulations administered by state radiation control programs.

  • California: CDPH Radiologic Health Branch — requires a separate Nuclear Medicine Technologist Certificate in addition to the radiologic technologist license
  • Texas: Texas Medical Board — Medical Radiologic Technologist license covering nuclear medicine
  • New York: NYS Office of the Professions — Radiologic Technology license covering nuclear medicine practice
  • Florida: Florida DBPR — Radiologic Technologist license with applicable specialty

Also confirm compliance with any applicable NRC (Nuclear Regulatory Commission) or Agreement State radiation protection requirements for radioactive materials handling in the role.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Identify the credential — ARRT R.T.(N) / R.T.(R)(N) or NMTCB CNMT; confirm which system to verify in
  • 2. Verify ARRT credentials at arrt.org — confirm Active status and all credentials held
  • 3. Verify NMTCB credentials at nmtcb.org — confirm CNMT and any specialty (PET, NCT) credentials are Active
  • 4. Verify state radiologic technology or nuclear medicine license in the applicable state
  • 5. For PET/CT roles: confirm both nuclear medicine and CT credentials or training are verified
  • 6. Confirm CE requirements for current renewal cycle are satisfied

Verify nuclear medicine program accreditation

Nuclear medicine technology programs must be accredited by JRCNMT (Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology) or CAAHEP. ARRT and NMTCB credential eligibility requires an accredited program. Use VerifyED to confirm accreditation status.
