How to Verify a Pharmacy Technician's Registration
Pharmacy technician registration requirements vary by state — some require state registration, some require national certification, and some require both. Here is how to verify pharmacy technician credentials.
Quick answer
Check the state board of pharmacy in the state of employment — most states register pharmacy technicians and have free public lookup tools. For technicians holding national certification, verify PTCB CPhT at ptcb.org/verify or NHA ExCPT at nhanow.com/verify-certification. Run an OIG exclusion check for any role in a Medicare/Medicaid pharmacy.
State registration requirements
Pharmacy technician registration varies significantly by state:
| Requirement Type | Examples |
|---|---|
| State registration only | Texas, Ohio, Georgia — register with state board, national cert not required |
| National certification required | Florida, Virginia, Michigan — must hold PTCB CPhT or NHA ExCPT |
| State license + national cert | California — must be both state-registered AND nationally certified |
| No state registration | A few states have no formal state registration; rely on national cert verification |
Step 1: State pharmacy board lookup
Most state boards of pharmacy maintain public technician registration lookups. Search by name or registration number to confirm registration status and expiration.
Key state pharmacy board portals
- California: CA State Board of Pharmacy — pharmacy.ca.gov
- Texas: TX State Board of Pharmacy — pharmacy.texas.gov
- Florida: FL DBPR — myfloridalicense.com
- New York: NYS Office of the Professions — op.nysed.gov/verification
- All states: NABP directory — nabp.pharmacy/boards-of-pharmacy
Step 2: PTCB CPhT certification
The Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) issues the CPhT (Certified Pharmacy Technician) credential, the most widely recognized national pharmacy technician certification. Verify at ptcb.org/verify by entering the technician's name or CPhT number.
CPhT requires passing the PTCE exam and completing continuing education for renewal. PTCB also offers specialty certifications:
- CSPT (Certified Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician)
- CPhT-Adv (Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician)
- CPGIT (Certified Pharmacy Technician in Geriatrics)
Step 3: NHA ExCPT certification
The National Healthcareer Association (NHA) issues the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians) credential, the second nationally recognized pharmacy technician certification. Verify at nhanow.com/verify-certification.
ExCPT is accepted by most state boards that require national certification alongside PTCB CPhT. If a state specifies only PTCB, confirm that ExCPT is also accepted before relying on it for compliance.
OIG exclusion check
For pharmacy technicians working in any pharmacy that bills Medicare or Medicaid, run an OIG exclusion check at oig.hhs.gov/exclusions. An excluded technician cannot be employed by or bill to any Medicare/Medicaid- participating facility or pharmacy. NABP's e-Profile also includes NABP disciplinary alerts for technicians — check both.
Verify pharmacy technician program credentials
PTCB and many state boards require completion of an approved pharmacy technician training program. Use VerifyED to confirm that a claimed pharmacy technician program comes from a legitimate institution.
