How to Verify a Phlebotomist Certification

Phlebotomy certification is not uniformly regulated by the states — most states do not require a specific certification to work as a phlebotomist, but employers and accredited labs often require it. There are four major certifying bodies. Here is how to verify credentials from each.

Quick answer

Verify phlebotomy credentials directly with the issuing organization. The four most recognized certifications are ASCP PBT (ascp.org), NPA CPT (nationalphleb.com), NCCT NCPT (ncctinc.com), and AMT RPT (americanmedtech.org). California is the only state with a mandatory phlebotomy license requirement — verify CA licenses separately with the California Department of Public Health.

The four major phlebotomy certifications

Phlebotomy certifications are issued by private organizations, not state boards. The four most widely recognized bodies are:

Credential Organization Verify At
PBT (ASCP) American Society for Clinical Pathology ascp.org → Verify a Credential
CPT National Phlebotomy Association (NPA) nationalphleb.com → Credential Verification
NCPT National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) ncctinc.com → Verify Certification
RPT American Medical Technologists (AMT) americanmedtech.org → Verify an AMT Member

ASCP's PBT is generally the most widely recognized in hospital and reference lab settings. Verify in the specific system that matches the credential presented on the candidate's resume or certificate.

ASCP certification verification

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification administers the PBT(ASCP) examination and maintains a public credential verification portal. ASCP credentials are also commonly abbreviated on resumes as simply “ASCP” without the full credential title.

The ASCP verification portal at ascp.org shows:

  • Credential type (PBT, MT, MLT, etc.) and current status
  • Whether continuing education requirements for the current cycle are satisfied
  • Certification expiration date

ASCP certification must be renewed every three years. Recertification requires 36 continuing education credits. A certificate that is not renewed lapses — confirm active status, not just that it was earned.

California phlebotomy license requirement

California is the primary exception to the general rule that phlebotomy is unregulated at the state level. California requires phlebotomists to hold a state-issued Phlebotomy Technician certification issued by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).

California phlebotomy technician levels include:

  • CPT I (Certified Phlebotomy Technician I): Basic venipuncture and skin puncture; most common
  • CPT II (Certified Phlebotomy Technician II): Arterial blood gas collection in addition to CPT I scope
  • Limited Phlebotomy Technician (LPT): Skin puncture only; no venipuncture

Verify California phlebotomy licenses at: California DPH Laboratory Field Services — search the CDPH license verification portal by name or license number. A private ASCP or NPA certification alone does not satisfy California's state licensure requirement.

Louisiana phlebotomy license requirement

Louisiana also requires state licensure for phlebotomists. The Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners oversees phlebotomy technician licensing. Verify Louisiana phlebotomy licenses through the Louisiana DHH or the relevant state health licensing portal.

Continuing education and renewal

All four major phlebotomy certifications require continuing education for renewal:

  • ASCP PBT: 36 CE credits every 3 years
  • NPA CPT: CE required per renewal cycle; verify current cycle status on the NPA portal
  • NCCT NCPT: 14 CE hours per year for recertification
  • AMT RPT: Continuing education units (CEUs) required per annual renewal period

Red flags in phlebotomy credential verification

  • Certificate from an organization not recognized by any of the four major bodies — phlebotomy certificate mills exist online
  • Expired certification presented as current — always verify renewal status, not just original award date
  • California or Louisiana candidates without a valid state license (private certification alone is not sufficient)
  • Training program certificates (completion certificates from phlebotomy training courses) presented as professional certifications — these are not the same thing

Verification checklist

  • 1. Collect the credential name (PBT, CPT, NCPT, RPT), issuing organization, and ID or certificate number
  • 2. Verify in the issuing organization's portal — confirm Active status and current certification period
  • 3. Confirm continuing education requirements for the current renewal cycle are met
  • 4. For California hires: separately verify California CDPH phlebotomy technician license (CPT I, CPT II, or LPT)
  • 5. For Louisiana hires: verify Louisiana state phlebotomy license
  • 6. Distinguish professional certification from training completion certificates — verify with the certifying body, not the training school

Verify allied health program accreditation

Phlebotomy and clinical laboratory science programs may be accredited by NAACLS or CAAHEP. Use VerifyED to confirm that a candidate's training program was properly accredited before accepting their educational credentials.
