How to Verify a School Counselor Credential

School counselors working in K-12 public schools must hold a state credential (license, certification, or endorsement) issued by the state department of education. This is separate from and in addition to any licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). Verification requires checking the state education credential, not just the clinical mental health license.

Quick answer

Verify school counselor credentials through the state department of education educator licensing portal in the state where the counselor will work. Most state education agencies offer online credential lookup. Also check the NASDTEC Educator License Transfer if the candidate holds credentials from multiple states.

School counselor credential vs. clinical counseling license

Two entirely different credential systems govern counselors who work in schools:

Credential Type Issuer Required For Verify At
School Counselor Credential (license / certificate / endorsement) State Department of Education (DOE / DESE / SBE) Employment as a school counselor in K-12 public schools State DOE educator licensing portal
LPC / LMHC / LCPC Clinical License State professional counseling or health professions board Independent clinical mental health practice; not always required for school employment State counseling board or health professions licensing portal

A school counselor may hold both credentials, but the school credential from the DOE is the operative one for K-12 employment. Do not substitute a clinical LPC license as evidence of a valid school counselor credential.

State DOE credential verification portals

Most state departments of education offer free public educator credential lookup. Selected portals:

  • California: CTC (Commission on Teacher Credentialing) — ctc.ca.gov → “Verify a License”; search by name or SSN last 4
  • Texas: SBEC (State Board for Educator Certification) — sbec.texas.gov → “Educator Search”
  • Florida: FL DOE — fldoe.org → “Verify Educator Certifications”
  • New York: NYSED TEACH — eservices.nysed.gov/teach; public lookup by name
  • Illinois: ISBE Educator Licensure — isbe.net → “Educator Licensure” → License Lookup
  • Georgia: GaPSC — gapsc.com → “License Verification”
  • Pennsylvania: PA DOE Educator Certification — certportfolio.pa.gov (formerly TIMS)
  • Ohio: OEPA — eduregistry.ode.ohio.gov; public educator lookup

State portals return: certificate/credential type (School Counselor), grade level authorization, issue date, expiration date, and any disciplinary history or surrender of credential.

NASDTEC Interstate Agreement

The NASDTEC Interstate Agreement facilitates credential portability for educators, including school counselors, between participating states. A school counselor credentialed in one state may be eligible for reciprocal licensure in another member state.

The NASDTEC Educator Identification Clearinghouse also maintains a database of educator certificate surrenders, revocations, and denials across member states. This is important for K-12 hiring compliance.

Access: nasdtec.net → “Clearinghouse.” The Clearinghouse is primarily accessed by state DOE members; some districts have direct access. If you are a school district HR team, confirm whether your state DOE provides Clearinghouse reports as part of the credential verification process.

NBCC NCC and NCSC certifications

The National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) issues two voluntary certifications relevant to school counselors:

Credential Full Name Verification
NCC National Certified Counselor nbcc.org → “Verify a Credential”; search by name or NCC number
NCSC National Certified School Counselor nbcc.org → “Verify a Credential”; NCSC is a specialty certification within the NBCC system

NBCC NCC and NCSC are voluntary national credentials and do not substitute for the state DOE school counselor credential. Many states accept the NCC as evidence of meeting educational and examination requirements for the state credential, but the state credential itself must still be obtained.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)

NBPTS offers National Board Certification for School Counselors as a voluntary advanced credential. NBPTS certification is highly regarded but is an enhancement credential — it does not replace the state DOE school counselor credential.

Verify NBPTS certification at nbpts.org → “Verify Certification.” NBPTS certification is valid for 10 years and requires renewal.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Verify the state DOE school counselor credential at the state department of education educator licensing portal; confirm credential type, grade level, active status, and expiration
  • 2. Do not substitute an LPC/LMHC clinical license for a school counselor DOE credential — these are separate credentials
  • 3. For candidates from other states, confirm they have obtained the state DOE credential in the hiring state, not just a credential from a prior state
  • 4. Check the NASDTEC Clearinghouse for any prior credential surrender or revocation across member states
  • 5. Verify NBCC NCC or NCSC at nbcc.org if the candidate lists these credentials; confirm active status and renewal date

Verify school counselor degree credentials

State school counselor credentials require a master's degree in school counseling or a related field from a CACREP-accredited or state-approved program. Use VerifyED to confirm that the institution granting the degree is properly regionally accredited.
