Healthcare License Verification
How to Verify an EEG Technologist Credential (REGT / REEGT)
EEG technologists record and analyze brain electrical activity for neurological diagnosis. The REGT and REEGT credentials are issued by ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing. Here is how to verify them.
Quick answer
Verify EEG technologist credentials through ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation at abret.org using the credential verification lookup. Search by name to confirm REGT, REEGT, or specialty credential active status.
ABRET credential tiers
ABRET Neurodiagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation is the primary credentialing body for EEG and neurodiagnostic technologists in the United States. ABRET issues:
- REGT (Registered EEG Technologist): Entry-level credential for EEG technologists. Requires documented clinical experience and passage of the REGT examination. The REGT is the baseline credential for routine EEG work.
- REEGT (Registered EEG Technologist Advanced): Advanced credential for experienced EEG technologists with additional education and clinical competency requirements. Required for long-term EEG monitoring and more complex studies in many facilities.
- CLTM (Certified Long-Term Monitoring Technologist): Specialty credential for ICU EEG monitoring and continuous EEG (cEEG) settings.
- CNIM (Certified Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring): Specialty for intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) — a distinct specialty from routine EEG.
- R.EEG T. (credential suffix): An older ABRET designation equivalent to the REGT; may appear on credentials issued before the designation was updated.
How to verify ABRET credentials
- Go to abret.org
- Navigate to “Verify a Credential” or the credential lookup tool
- Search by the technologist's name
- Confirm: credential type (REGT, REEGT, CLTM, CNIM), Active status, and expiration date
- Note any specialty designations associated with the credential
ABRET credential renewal
ABRET credentials are renewed every five years through continuing education or re-examination. An expired ABRET credential means the technologist is no longer certified. For ICU cEEG or IONM roles, confirm that the specific specialty credential (CLTM or CNIM) is current in addition to the base REGT or REEGT.
State licensure for EEG technologists
Most states do not license EEG technologists separately. In states without specific EEG licensure, the ABRET credential is the primary standard used by hospitals, neurology clinics, and epilepsy monitoring units.
Check for state respiratory or EEG licensing overlap
Some states regulate neurodiagnostic technologists under broader allied health licensing frameworks. Additionally, EEG technologists who also perform polysomnography may need a separate respiratory therapy or sleep technology credential in states that regulate those functions. Verify all applicable credentials based on the full scope of practice for the role.
IONM (intraoperative monitoring) note
Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) is a distinct specialty from routine EEG. IONM technologists monitor patients during surgery to detect neurologic compromise in real time. The primary credential is the CNIM (Certified Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring), also issued by ABRET.
Do not assume an REGT or REEGT credential qualifies a technologist for IONM roles — the CNIM is the specific credential for that subspecialty. Verify CNIM credentials through the same ABRET lookup at abret.org.
Red flags
- Name not found in ABRET credential lookup at abret.org
- Expired ABRET credential (5-year renewal cycle)
- REGT credential presented for REEGT-required advanced monitoring roles
- No CNIM credential for intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring positions
- No CLTM for continuous EEG (cEEG) or ICU monitoring roles where required
- Degree or training from a non-CAAHEP-accredited neurodiagnostic program
Verification checklist
- 1. Verify REGT, REEGT, CLTM, or CNIM at abret.org — confirm Active status and expiration
- 2. Confirm credential level matches the role (REGT for routine, REEGT/CLTM for advanced monitoring)
- 3. For IONM positions, confirm CNIM credential specifically
- 4. Check whether the state of practice has any neurodiagnostic or allied health licensing requirements
- 5. Verify the training program was CAAHEP-accredited if the credential requires program accreditation
Verify neurodiagnostic technology program accreditation
Neurodiagnostic technology programs are accredited by CAAHEP through CoAND. Use VerifyED to confirm whether a school's program is legitimate and meets ABRET credentialing requirements.
