How to Verify an Exercise Physiologist Certification

Exercise physiologist certifications are issued by multiple organizations — primarily ACSM, NSCA, and ASEP. Unlike nursing or physical therapy, exercise physiology is not state-licensed in most states. Credential verification requires contacting the specific certifying body named on the candidate's credential.

Quick answer

Identify which organization issued the credential, then verify directly with that body: ACSM (acsm.org) for EP-C and RCEP, NSCA (nsca.com) for CSCS and NSCA-CPT, or ASEP (asep.org) for the EPC. There is no unified national exercise physiology registry. Confirm credential level, active status, and renewal date.

Exercise physiologist credentials at a glance

The term “exercise physiologist” is used loosely in practice. Key credentials from the major certifying bodies:

Credential Issuer Scope / Setting Verify At
EP-C (Exercise Physiologist Certified) ACSM Apparently healthy populations; fitness and wellness programs acsm.org
RCEP (Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist) ACSM Clinical populations — cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, oncology; typically requires a master's degree acsm.org
CEP (Certified Exercise Physiologist) ASEP (American Society of Exercise Physiologists) Academic-track credential; bachelor's or graduate degree required asep.org
CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) NSCA Athletic and performance populations; coaches and exercise science professionals nsca.com

The ACSM RCEP is considered the clinical gold standard and is recognized by CMS for cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation reimbursement in many states. The EP-C is the entry-level ACSM credential. These are distinct certifications with different eligibility requirements.

ACSM credential verification

ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) offers certification verification through its online registry.

How to verify ACSM credentials

  1. Go to acsm.org → “Pro Corner” → “Certification Verification”
  2. Search by name or certification number
  3. Confirm credential type (EP-C vs. RCEP), certification status (Active / Expired / Suspended), and expiration date

ACSM credentials are renewed on a 3-year cycle via continuing education credits. An expired ACSM credential can be reinstated within a defined window; after that window, re-examination is required.

NSCA credential verification

NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association) issues the CSCS and NSCA-CPT. NSCA credentials are particularly relevant for strength and conditioning coaches, sport performance professionals, and exercise science faculty.

How to verify NSCA credentials

  1. Go to nsca.com → “Certification” → “Verify a Certification”
  2. Search by name or certification number
  3. Confirm credential type, active status, and expiration

The CSCS requires a bachelor's degree (or current enrollment in a bachelor's program) as an eligibility prerequisite. If a candidate claims CSCS certification, also verify their educational credential meets this requirement.

ASEP credential verification

ASEP (American Society of Exercise Physiologists) offers the Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) credential, which is positioned as an academic-standards credential requiring an exercise physiology degree from an ASEP-recognized program. ASEP CEP is less common than ACSM or NSCA credentials in most clinical and fitness settings.

Verify ASEP CEP credentials by contacting ASEP directly at asep.org → “Certification” → “Verify My Certification” or by emailing the ASEP certification office. ASEP does not maintain a widely accessible public registry.

State licensure

Exercise physiology is state-licensed in only a small number of jurisdictions. Louisiana is the most prominent example, with a Licensed Exercise Physiologist (LEP) credential regulated by the Louisiana Board of Medical Examiners.

In the vast majority of states, “exercise physiologist” is an unprotected title. This means an individual can use the title without holding the ACSM, NSCA, or ASEP credential. For hiring purposes, always specify which credential(s) are required and verify them directly with the issuing body.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Identify which organization issued the credential — ACSM, NSCA, or ASEP — and the specific credential name (EP-C, RCEP, CSCS, CEP)
  • 2. Verify at the issuing organization's credential lookup: acsm.org, nsca.com, or asep.org
  • 3. Confirm credential level matches the role — EP-C for wellness settings, RCEP for clinical populations
  • 4. Confirm active status and note expiration date; ACSM and NSCA renew on 3-year cycles
  • 5. For CSCS: verify that the candidate holds a bachelor's degree (required for CSCS eligibility)
  • 6. For clinical roles (cardiac rehab, pulmonary rehab): confirm RCEP or equivalent credential and CMS billing eligibility in the applicable state

Verify exercise science program accreditation

Exercise physiology and exercise science degree programs are offered by regionally accredited colleges and universities. Some ACSM and NSCA credentials require a degree as a prerequisite. Use VerifyED to confirm the institution granting the degree was legitimately accredited.
