How to Verify an MRI Technologist Credential

MRI technologists are credentialed by ARRT or ARMRIT and, in most states, must hold a state radiologic technology license. The MRI credential can be a primary ARRT credential or a post-primary specialty. Understanding the credential pathway determines where and how to verify it.

Quick answer

The primary MRI technologist credential is R.T.(MR) from ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists). Verify at arrt.org. ARMRIT (American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists) offers a separate MRT credential — verify at armrit.org. Also verify the state radiologic technology license and confirm the candidate's MRI safety training.

ARRT MRI credential pathways

ARRT offers MRI credentials through two pathways:

Credential Pathway Notes
R.T.(MR) Primary MRI credential Entered directly through MRI-specific training; does not require a prior R.T.(R) radiography credential
R.T.(R)(MR) Post-primary MRI specialty added to radiography credential Radiographers who add MRI as a post-primary specialty; must hold active R.T.(R)

When verifying, the ARRT portal shows all credentials held. A candidate with R.T.(R)(MR) has both radiography and MRI credentials; a candidate with R.T.(MR) alone has MRI but not radiography.

ARRT credential verification

Verify ARRT credentials at: arrt.org → Verify Credentials (search by name or registration number). The ARRT verification portal shows all credentials the registrant holds, their status, and renewal cycle information.

ARRT credentials require 24 continuing education credits every two years for renewal. Confirm the CE cycle is current and the R.T.(MR) or R.T.(R)(MR) credential is Active.

ARMRIT credential verification

The American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists (ARMRIT) issues the MRT (Magnetic Resonance Technologist) credential. ARMRIT is an alternative credentialing organization recognized in some facilities, particularly those where MRI technologists entered the field without a prior radiography background.

Verify ARMRIT MRT credentials at: armrit.org → Verify Credentials. Confirm Active status and renewal date. Some state licensing boards and employers require ARRT specifically and do not accept ARMRIT — confirm facility requirements before evaluating.

State radiologic technology licensing

Most states license radiologic technologists, and those laws generally cover MRI technologists as well. State licensing may require:

  • Holding a current ARRT or ARMRIT credential
  • A state-issued radiologic technology license
  • Annual or biennial license renewal with CE documentation

State licensing portals for radiologic technologists (selected):

  • California: California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch — cdph.ca.gov; Fluoroscopy/Radiologic Tech certification lookup
  • Texas: Texas Medical Board — lookup.tmb.state.tx.us; Medical Radiologic Technologist
  • Florida: Florida DBPR — myfloridalicense.com; Radiologic Technologist
  • New York: NYS Office of the Professions — op.nysed.gov/verification; Radiologic Technology
  • Illinois: Illinois IDFPR — idfpr.illinois.gov/LicenseLookup; Radiologic Technologist

MRI safety considerations in credentialing

MRI technologists have a unique patient safety role: they are responsible for pre-scan MRI safety screening, identifying contraindicated implants, and enforcing the MR environment safety zones. Many facilities require MRI-specific safety training beyond the national credential.

The American Board of Magnetic Resonance Safety (ABMRS) offers an MRI Safety Expert (MRSE) credential for advanced MRI safety professionals. While not universally required, it is increasingly expected for lead or safety officer MRI positions. Verify ABMRS credentials at abmrs.org.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Identify the MRI credential — ARRT R.T.(MR), ARRT R.T.(R)(MR), or ARMRIT MRT
  • 2. Verify ARRT credentials at arrt.org — confirm Active status and all credentials held
  • 3. For ARMRIT credentials: verify at armrit.org — confirm Active status; confirm facility accepts ARMRIT
  • 4. Verify state radiologic technology license in the applicable state
  • 5. Confirm CE renewal cycle is current (ARRT: 24 credits per 2-year cycle)
  • 6. For leadership or safety officer roles: verify ABMRS MRSE credential if applicable

Verify radiologic science program accreditation

MRI technologist and radiologic technology programs must be accredited by JRCERT (Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology). ARRT credential eligibility requires a JRCERT-accredited program. Use VerifyED to confirm accreditation status.
