How to Verify an Ophthalmic Technician or Technologist Credential

Ophthalmic allied health personnel — who assist ophthalmologists and optometrists with patient care, diagnostic testing, and surgical assistance — are credentialed through JCAHPO (Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology). JCAHPO issues a tiered credential series: COA, COT, and COMT. Most states do not separately license ophthalmic technicians, making the JCAHPO credential the primary verification point.

Quick answer

Verify ophthalmic technician and technologist credentials through JCAHPO at jcahpo.org → “Verify a Certificate.” Enter the candidate's name or certificate number to confirm credential type (COA, COT, or COMT), active status, and expiration date.

JCAHPO credential tiers

JCAHPO issues three primary credentials in ascending order of complexity and experience:

Credential Full Name Requirements Scope
COA Certified Ophthalmic Assistant Entry-level; no prior experience required; JCAHPO COA examination Basic patient history, visual acuity, tonometry, instrument maintenance
COT Certified Ophthalmic Technician 1 year experience as COA or equivalent; COT examination Expanded testing: refractometry, visual fields, OCT, anterior segment photography, contact lens fitting
COMT Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist COT credential + additional experience and training; COMT examination Advanced testing, surgical assisting, ophthalmic photography, electrodiagnostics; highest JCAHPO credential tier

Credentials are progressive: COMT holders have previously held COT, which required prior COA. When reviewing a resume, the highest held credential is the operative one. Confirm that it is current.

JCAHPO credential verification

JCAHPO maintains a public credential verification tool accessible without registration or fee.

How to verify a JCAHPO credential

  1. Go to jcahpo.org → “Verify a Certificate”
  2. Search by name or certificate number
  3. Confirm credential type (COA, COT, or COMT), active status, and expiration date

JCAHPO credentials are renewed every 3 years through continuing education (CE) hours. An expired credential means the technician has not met renewal requirements and is no longer certified at that tier. They may re-test to reinstate the credential.

Ophthalmic Surgical Assisting (OSA) credential

JCAHPO also offers the OSA (Ophthalmic Surgical Assisting) credential for technicians who specialize in assisting with ophthalmic surgical procedures (cataract, LASIK, retinal surgery). OSA is an add-on credential for COT or COMT holders.

Verify OSA credentials through the same JCAHPO verification portal. OSA is relevant when hiring for surgical ophthalmic tech roles in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) or hospital-based ophthalmology departments.

NCLE contact lens credentials

The National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) — operated by ABO-NCLE, the same organization that credentials opticians — offers two contact lens credentials that may appear on ophthalmic staff resumes:

Credential Full Name Verification
NCLEC National Contact Lens Examiners Certified abo-ncle.org → “Find an Optician” (covers both ABO and NCLE credentials)
NCLE-AC National Contact Lens Examiners — Advanced Contact Lenses abo-ncle.org — same registry

NCLE credentials are separate from JCAHPO credentials. An ophthalmic technician may hold both. Contact lens fitting authority varies by state — some states require specific licensure for contact lens fitting beyond the credential.

State licensure

The majority of states do not independently license ophthalmic technicians as a separate health profession. However, some states regulate scope of practice under optometry or medical practice acts — meaning that certain tasks (refraction, contact lens fitting, dilation) may require specific training or supervision, even if there is no separate license for the technician role.

A small number of states (including some with active optometry practice acts) may impose additional credentialing or training documentation requirements. Confirm state-specific requirements with the practice's compliance officer or the state optometry board.

Verification checklist

  • 1. Verify JCAHPO credential (COA, COT, or COMT) at jcahpo.org; confirm the credential level, active status, and expiration date
  • 2. Confirm the credential tier matches the role requirements — COMT for senior or surgical assisting positions, COT for most technician roles
  • 3. For surgical assisting roles: check for the JCAHPO OSA add-on credential
  • 4. For contact lens roles: verify NCLE or NCLE-AC credential at abo-ncle.org if the candidate claims contact lens fitting competency
  • 5. Confirm that CE renewal requirements have been met; credentials expire on a 3-year cycle

Verify ophthalmic technology program accreditation

Ophthalmic medical technology programs are offered at CAAHEP- accredited institutions and community colleges. Use VerifyED to confirm that the institution where a candidate completed their training is properly accredited.
