How to Verify an Optician License (ABO-NCLE, State Board)

Opticians are regulated differently than optometrists or ophthalmologists. Roughly half of U.S. states require optician licensure; the rest are unregulated. The American Board of Opticianry and National Contact Lens Examiners (ABO-NCLE) offers the primary national certifications. Verification depends on whether the state requires licensure.

Quick answer

Verify optician credentials at abo-ncle.org → Verify Certification for ABO (ophthalmic dispensing) and NCLE (contact lens fitting) national certifications. For state-licensed opticians, verify at the state optician licensing board or state board of optometry (varies by state). Confirm the credential is appropriate for the practice type: spectacle dispensing (ABO), contact lenses (NCLE), or both.

ABO-NCLE national certifications

ABO-NCLE (abo-ncle.org) administers the two primary national voluntary certifications for opticians:

Credential Full Name Scope
ABO American Board of Opticianry Certification Ophthalmic lens dispensing: reading prescriptions, frame fitting, lens fabrication/dispensing for spectacles
NCLE National Contact Lens Examiners Certification Contact lens fitting and dispensing; required or preferred for contact lens practice
ABOC / NCLEC ABO Certified / NCLE Certified Designations for certified practitioners; require biennial renewal and continuing education
ABO-AC / NCLE-AC ABO Advanced Certified / NCLE Advanced Certified Advanced-level certifications requiring additional examination; higher clinical competency standard

Verify ABO and NCLE certifications at: abo-ncle.org → Verify Certification. You will need the candidate's name or ABO-NCLE ID number. The portal confirms certification status (active/expired), certification level, and expiration date.

States requiring optician licensure

Approximately 23 states and D.C. require optician licensure. The ABO exam is used as the qualifying exam in most of these states.

Selected licensed states and verification portals

  • California: CA State Board of Optometry — optometry.ca.gov → License Lookup; Registered Dispensing Optician (RDO) and Contact Lens Dispensing (CLD) permit
  • New York: NY Office of the Professions — op.nysed.gov → License Verification; Licensed Dispensing Optician
  • Florida: FL Board of Opticianry — flhealthsource.gov → License Search; Licensed Optician
  • Texas: TX Optometry Board — tob.texas.gov → License Verification; Apprentice or Licensed Optician
  • Massachusetts: MA Board of Registration in Optometry — mass.gov → License Lookup
  • Illinois: IL Department of Financial & Professional Regulation → License Lookup; Licensed Dispensing Optician
  • Ohio: OH Optical Dispensers Board — optical.ohio.gov → License Lookup

For states not listed, check whether your state has a separate optician licensing board, or whether opticianry falls under the state board of optometry or a general professional licensing department.

States with no optician licensure requirement

Approximately 27 states do not require opticians to hold a license or state registration. In these states:

  • No state verification portal exists; there is nothing to look up
  • ABO-NCLE national certification becomes the primary quality signal
  • Employer verification relies on the ABO-NCLE portal and direct credential review
  • Some optical retail chains impose their own internal certification requirements in lieu of state requirements

Optician vs. optometrist vs. ophthalmologist

Candidates sometimes blur these distinctions on applications. Clarify the credential type being claimed:

Role Scope Verify Where
Optician Fabricates and dispenses eyewear and contact lenses based on prescriptions; cannot prescribe ABO-NCLE (national); state optician/optometry board (licensed states)
Optometrist (OD) Examines eyes, diagnoses conditions, prescribes corrective lenses, treats certain eye diseases State board of optometry; NBEO (nbeo.org)
Ophthalmologist (MD/DO) Medical doctor specializing in eye surgery and disease; prescribes State medical board; ABMS (abms.org)

Verification checklist

  • 1. Determine whether the practice state requires optician licensure; if so, verify at the state board
  • 2. Verify ABO certification (if claimed) at abo-ncle.org → Verify Certification
  • 3. Verify NCLE certification (if role includes contact lens fitting) at abo-ncle.org
  • 4. Confirm certification is current and not expired (ABO-NCLE requires renewal every two years)
  • 5. For licensed states: confirm license status and check for any disciplinary history at the state board
  • 6. Use VerifyED to verify the institution that awarded any opticianry degree or diploma program

Verify optical education credentials

Opticianry programs are offered by community colleges, technical schools, and career colleges. Use VerifyED to confirm the awarding institution was regionally accredited and is not listed as a diploma mill before accepting a candidate's educational credentials.
