How to Verify French University Degrees and Credentials

France's higher education system is complex: public universities (universités), elite Grandes Écoles, and a large private/non-profit sector operate under different frameworks. RNCP registration is the key quality marker. France's two-track university/Grande École system confuses international employers — understand the distinction before evaluating credentials.

Key takeaway

France's higher education credentials are governed by the Ministère de l'Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche (MESR). The RNCP (Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles), managed by France Compétences, is the national registry of recognized professional certifications and degrees. A French degree that is RNCP- registered is state-recognized. Public universities (Universités) and engineering/ business Grandes Écoles (e.g., École Polytechnique, HEC Paris, Sciences Po) have very different structures — both are legitimate but operate differently. France follows the Bologna Process (Licence 3 ans / Master 2 ans / Doctorat). France is an Apostille Convention member — apostilles are issued by the Cour d'Appel (Court of Appeal) in the jurisdiction where the institution is located.

France's higher education structure

France has approximately 74 public universities (universités) under MESR oversight, plus the Grandes Écoles system. Understanding the difference is critical for credential evaluation:

  • Universités — Open-admission public universities granting national degrees (Licence, Master, Doctorat). Attended by the majority of French students. Examples: Sorbonne Université, Université Paris-Saclay, Aix-Marseille Université.
  • Grandes Écoles d'Ingénieurs — Selective engineering schools. Examples: École Polytechnique (X), CentraleSupélec, École des Mines ParisTech, ENSTA Paris. Graduates receive a "Diplôme d'ingénieur" — a state-recognized engineer's degree equivalent to a Master's.
  • Grandes Écoles de Commerce / Management — Selective business schools. Examples: HEC Paris, ESSEC, ESCP Europe, emlyon. Typically Grande École diplomas or national Master's degrees.
  • Sciences Po — Institut d'études politiques de Paris and regional Sciences Po — highly selective social sciences/politics institutions.
  • IUT (Institut Universitaire de Technologie) — Part of universities; award 2-year BUT (Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie), equivalent to AQF Level 6.

The Diplôme d'ingénieur is accredited by CTI (Commission des titres d'ingénieur). Business school programs may be accredited by AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA. These accreditations supplement RNCP registration.

Step-by-step verification

Step 1 — Search VerifyED

Start at VerifyED. 912,000 institutions including French universities, Grandes Écoles, and fraudulent "French" branded entities.

Step 2 — Check RNCP registration on France Compétences

Visit francecompetences.fr and search the RNCP database for the specific credential title and awarding institution. A credential with an active RNCP registration is state-recognized in France. Note the RNCP level (Niveau 6 = Licence/Bachelor, Niveau 7 = Master, Niveau 8 = Doctorat).

Step 3 — Identify the institution type (Université vs. Grande École)

Determine whether the institution is a public université (check the MESR list) or a Grande École. For engineering Grandes Écoles, verify CTI accreditation (cti-commission.fr). For business schools, check AACSB, EQUIS, or AMBA accreditation in addition to RNCP registration.

Step 4 — Understand the Bologna degree names

France follows Bologna: Licence = 3 years (equivalent to bachelor's), Master = 2 additional years (equivalent to master's), Doctorat = 3 additional years. "Licence professionnelle" is a 1-year applied degree on top of 2-year BTS/IUT. "DUT" (now BUT) is a 2-3 year technical diploma, not a bachelor's degree. Verify the specific qualification level against the RNCP record.

Step 5 — Apostille for international use

France is an Apostille Convention member. Academic documents are apostilled by the Cour d'Appel (regional Court of Appeal) for the jurisdiction where the institution is located. Transcripts must first be certified by the institution before apostille application. The apostilled document is accepted in all Convention member countries.

French credential fraud patterns

Fake "Paris" or "Sorbonne" institutions

"La Sorbonne" refers to the historic building and cultural legacy, not a single institution — the Sorbonne brand has been divided among Sorbonne Université, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and others. Diploma mills use "Sorbonne Business School," "Paris University of Management," or similar names to invoke Parisian prestige. Verify the exact legal institution name against the MESR institution list and RNCP database.

Unrecognized private schools

France has a large sector of private "écoles" that are not state-recognized. Some have sought RNCP registration for specific programs — verify the specific credential against RNCP, not just the institution name. An institution may be legally operating as a school without having its credentials recognized by the state. RNCP registration for the specific credential is required for state recognition.

MBA confusion

In France, "MBA" is not a protected title — many private schools use it freely regardless of recognition. A genuine accredited MBA from HEC, INSEAD, ESCP, or ESSEC will have RNCP registration and AACSB/EQUIS/AMBA accreditation. An "MBA" from an unregistered private school may have no state recognition at all. Always verify the RNCP registration for any French MBA credential.
