How to Verify Indonesian Degrees and University Credentials

Indonesia has over 4,500 higher education institutions. The primary verification tools are PDDikti (the national student/graduate database) and BAN-PT accreditation records. Knowing which to check — and what the results mean — prevents credential fraud.

Key takeaway

Indonesia's higher education system is overseen by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Kemdikbudristek) for public institutions and the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) for Islamic universities. PDDikti (pddikti.kemdikbud.go.id) is the national database — every accredited graduate should appear in it. BAN-PT (ban-pt.kemdikbud.go.id) is the national accreditation board. LAMs (Lembaga Akreditasi Mandiri) handle program-level accreditation for specific fields (LAM-PTKes for health sciences, LAMEMBA for economics/business). Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention in 2022 — documents issued after that date can be apostilled. For foreign credential evaluation, use NACES members (WES, ECE, etc.).

Indonesia's higher education landscape

Indonesia has over 4,500 higher education institutions, making it one of the largest systems in the world. Universitas Indonesia (UI, Depok/Jakarta), Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM, Yogyakarta), Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB), and Universitas Airlangga (Unair, Surabaya) are the flagship public research universities. The 11 PTN-BH (autonomous state universities) have the highest research output and international recognition.

Islamic higher education is overseen by Kemenag. Major Islamic universities include Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, UIN Sunan Kalijaga (Yogyakarta), and Institut Agama Islam Negeri (IAIN) institutions nationwide. These are legitimate, government-funded institutions — not unaccredited religious schools.

Degree types: Sarjana (S1, equivalent to bachelor's, 4 years), Diploma IV/Sarjana Terapan (applied bachelor's), Magister (S2, master's), and Doktor (S3, doctorate). Diploma I–III (D1–D3) are sub-degree vocational qualifications from polytechnics. An "S1" from an accredited institution is broadly equivalent to a US bachelor's degree.

Primary verification tools

PDDikti — national graduate database

PDDikti (pddikti.kemdikbud.go.id) is maintained by Kemdikbudristek and contains enrollment and graduation records for all higher education institutions registered with the ministry. Search by name (full name in Indonesian format) or student ID. A confirmed PDDikti record is strong evidence of legitimate attendance. However, some older records (pre-2010) may not be digitized.

BAN-PT — institutional and program accreditation

BAN-PT (ban-pt.kemdikbud.go.id) accredits institutions and academic programs. Accreditation grades are A (Unggul/Excellent), B (Baik Sekali/Very Good), and C (Baik/Good). Programs without current BAN-PT or LAM accreditation may be operating on expired status — check the accreditation date. An unaccredited program's graduates may not meet professional licensing requirements in Indonesia.

LAMs — specialized program accreditation

Certain professional fields use LAMs instead of BAN-PT for program accreditation. LAM-PTKes (health sciences: medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy), LAMEMBA (economics/business/accounting), and LAM Teknik (engineering) are the most relevant. For healthcare credentials, LAM-PTKes accreditation and Indonesian Medical Council (IDI/KKI) registration are both required.

Document authentication and foreign evaluation

Purpose Process
Apostille (post-2022) Ministry of Law and Human Rights (apostille.ahu.go.id)
Legalization (pre-2022 documents) Notarize → District court → Ministry of Education → Ministry of Foreign Affairs → Indonesian embassy in destination country
US credential evaluation NACES member (WES, ECE, IERF, etc.) — 4–8 weeks
UK credential evaluation ENIC-NARIC (ECCTIS)

Step-by-step verification

Step 1 — Search VerifyED

Start at VerifyED. Enter the institution name. VerifyED flags known problematic institutions against its database of 2,592 diploma mills and unaccredited schools.

Step 2 — Search PDDikti

Go to pddikti.kemdikbud.go.id. Search for the graduate by full name. Cross-reference the institution name, program, and graduation year against the diploma. A missing PDDikti record for a post-2000 graduate is a red flag.

Step 3 — Verify BAN-PT or LAM accreditation

Check ban-pt.kemdikbud.go.id for the institution and specific program. Confirm the accreditation grade and that it was active at the time the degree was issued. For health, business, or engineering programs, check the relevant LAM.

Step 4 — Verify Islamic institution status

Islamic universities under Kemenag are registered separately. Check emis.kemenag.go.id for Kemenag-supervised institutions. UIN and IAIN institutions are legitimate state universities — treat them like any other public university.

Step 5 — Request apostille or legalization

For foreign employment or immigration, authenticated documents are required. Indonesia joined the Apostille Convention on June 4, 2022. Documents issued or legalized after that date can receive an apostille through the Ministry of Law. Pre-2022 documents require the full consular legalization chain.

Indonesian credential fraud patterns

UI and ITB name fraud

Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) are Indonesia's most prestigious institutions. Fraudulent credentials use similar names — "Indonesia University," "Universitas Indonesia Raya," or "ITB Institute." UI's legal name is "Universitas Indonesia" and ITB's is "Institut Teknologi Bandung." Verify against PDDikti and BAN-PT.

Diploma III vs. Sarjana (S1) confusion

Indonesian vocational diplomas (D3, roughly equivalent to an associate degree or higher national diploma) are sometimes misrepresented as equivalent to a Sarjana (S1, bachelor's degree). Check the degree type in PDDikti — D3 and S1 are distinct qualifications with different credit requirements and career implications.

Expired or unaccredited programs

Indonesia has thousands of institutions, many with programs that have lapsed accreditation. A degree from an institution may be legitimate while a specific program within that institution was unaccredited at the time of enrollment. Always check program-level accreditation, not just institutional accreditation.
