Nigeria Diploma Mills: A Verification Guide for Employers
Nigeria has more known diploma mills than any other country in Africa — and a sophisticated document fraud industry that produces convincing fake credentials from real institutions. Here is how Nigerian degrees are verified, which institutions are legitimate, and how to detect fraudulent documents.

Nigeria is considered a high-risk credential origin country by most background check providers. The country has a documented diploma mill sector, widespread transcript forgery targeting both domestic employers and international immigration processes, and a "statement of result" fraud pattern where fake WAEC documents are sold commercially. Nigeria's higher education structure
Nigeria's tertiary education is overseen by two federal bodies:
- NUC The National Universities Commission accredits and regulates universities. Only NUC-accredited institutions can legally award degrees in Nigeria.
- NBTE/NCCE The National Board for Technical Education and National Commission for Colleges of Education oversee polytechnics, colleges of technology, and teacher training colleges.
Nigeria has approximately 170 NUC-accredited universities — federal, state, and private. Institutions not on the NUC list are operating illegally and their credentials have no standing.
Secondary school credentials (the O-Level WAEC/NECO results required for university admission) are a separate, frequently-targeted fraud vector. An applicant may hold a legitimate university degree but have forged O-Level results that enabled their admission — this matters particularly for regulated professions.
How to verify a Nigerian degree
Step 1: Confirm NUC accreditation
The NUC maintains a public list of all accredited universities at nuc.edu.ng. Search for the institution by name before proceeding. Private universities are particularly worth checking — several have been shut down or had accreditation withdrawn after the degree was issued.

Step 2: NYSC discharge certificate

Useful heuristic
A legitimate NYSC discharge certificate is strong evidence that the underlying degree is from an NUC-accredited institution. NYSC will not mobilize graduates from unaccredited schools. This is one of the more reliable secondary verification signals for Nigerian graduates.
Step 3: University registrar contact
For employment background checks, direct contact with the issuing university registrar is the definitive verification method. Major Nigerian universities have established verification procedures, though response times vary:

Always request confirmation on institutional letterhead with a reference number. Email-only responses without letterhead should prompt follow-up verification.
Known Nigerian diploma mill patterns
1. "Accredited" mills claiming NUC approval
Multiple Nigerian diploma mills operate websites claiming NUC accreditation that does not exist or was revoked. Always verify against the live NUC institution list — a Google search for the institution is not sufficient.
2. "Certificate mills" using polytechnic branding
Several unaccredited institutions operate under names similar to legitimate federal polytechnics. Names like "Federal Polytechnic [City]" may or may not be NUC/NBTE-recognized. Verify the specific institution, not just the institution type.
3. Forged documents from real universities
Nigeria has an active commercial market for forged transcripts and degree certificates from legitimate universities. University of Lagos, UNILAG, and Covenant University credentials are frequently targeted. The institution looks clean in VerifyED; the individual's enrollment does not check out via registrar contact.
4. Distance-learning degree farms
Some Nigerian and internationally-registered entities offer "distance learning degrees" from Nigerian institutions that have no such programs. If the degree was earned via distance learning, confirm the institution actually offers that program format through NOUN (National Open University of Nigeria) — the only federally authorized distance-learning university.

For US immigration and licensure
For immigration purposes (H-1B, O-1, EB-2/3) or professional licensure, raw Nigerian degree documents are not accepted without evaluation. Use a NACES-member evaluator. WES specifically accepts Nigerian credentials and has procedures for direct institutional verification.
