Key takeaway

Delaware's degree-granting institutions are regionally accredited by MSCHE (Middle States Commission on Higher Education). The University of Delaware (Newark) is the flagship research university. Delaware State University (Dover) is a historically Black university. Delaware Technical Community College (Delaware Tech) is the sole statewide community college system with four campuses. The Office of Post-Secondary Education (OPPE) within the Delaware Department of Education authorizes private postsecondary institutions. Delaware is small but legally distinct — verify institution names carefully given proximity to New Jersey and Maryland.

Delaware's accreditation landscape

The University of Delaware (UD) in Newark is Delaware's flagship land-grant research university, classified as R1 doctoral. It offers programs across arts and sciences, business, education, engineering, health sciences, and agriculture. UD is MSCHE-accredited.

Delaware State University (DSU) in Dover is a public HBCU with a comprehensive range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. DSU is MSCHE-accredited and a member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.

Delaware Technical Community College (Delaware Tech) operates four campuses (Dover, Georgetown, Stanton, Wilmington) under a unified MSCHE accreditation. Wilmington University (private, New Castle) is the largest private institution and is also MSCHE-accredited. Wesley College merged into Delaware State University in 2021. Goldey-Beacom College (Wilmington, private) is MSCHE-accredited. The Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) oversees K-12 schools.

Step-by-step verification

Step 1 — Search VerifyED

Start at VerifyED. Enter the institution name. VerifyED flags known diploma mills against a database of 2,592 problematic institutions.

Step 2 — Check MSCHE for regional accreditation

MSCHE (msche.org) accredits degree-granting institutions in Delaware. Search the MSCHE directory by institution name. Confirm accreditation status and review any sanctions or show-cause orders.

Step 3 — Check OPPE for private institution authorization

Private postsecondary institutions operating in Delaware must be authorized by OPPE (education.delaware.gov). An institution not listed in both MSCHE and OPPE records is not operating legally as a degree-granting school in Delaware.

Step 4 — Distinguish Delaware Tech campuses

Delaware Technical Community College operates four campuses under one institutional accreditation. Degrees and certificates issued from any campus — Dover, Georgetown, Stanton (near Newark), or Wilmington — carry the same MSCHE-accredited standing.

Step 5 — Screen against diploma mill list

Delaware's permissive corporate registration laws make it an attractive registration address for fraudulent entities. A Delaware LLC registration alone does not constitute authorization to grant degrees. Screen all unfamiliar institutions through VerifyED.

Delaware fraud patterns to watch

Delaware incorporation as a legitimacy signal

Delaware is the most popular US state for corporate registrations due to its business-friendly laws. Diploma mills and unaccredited institutions frequently incorporate in Delaware while having no real academic presence. A Delaware Certificate of Incorporation is entirely unrelated to academic accreditation.

University of Delaware name fraud

The University of Delaware's legal name is "University of Delaware." Credentials using "Delaware University," "University of Wilmington," or similar variants should be verified carefully. Wilmington University is a separate, legitimate MSCHE-accredited institution (not to be confused with UD).

Wesley College merger

Wesley College (Dover) merged into Delaware State University in 2021. Credentials from Wesley College are legitimate but should be verified through DSU's records for the merged institution. Fraudulent actors have exploited merger confusion with similar institution names.
