Guatemala's higher education system

Guatemala's higher education is overseen by the Consejo de la Enseñanza Privada Superior (CEPS) for private universities. The Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala (USAC) (founded 1676) is the sole public university and is constitutionally autonomous. Guatemala has approximately 15 universities, with USAC being the largest and most established.

Verification steps

  1. Check CEPS authorization — For private universities, verify CEPS authorization. VerifyED includes authorized Guatemalan institutions.
  2. Contact the institution — Guatemalan universities maintain registrar offices for verification.
  3. USAC verification — USAC degrees can be verified through the university's registrar.
  4. Apostille — Guatemala is a Hague Convention member. Documents can be apostilled.

Key considerations

  • USAC — Founded in 1676, the only public university and the largest institution.
  • Constitutional autonomy — USAC has constitutional autonomy, operating independently from government oversight.
  • Spanish-language credentials — All credentials are issued in Spanish.
