Mexico's higher education system

Mexico's higher education is overseen by the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP). Institutions must have RVOE (Reconocimiento de Validez Oficial de Estudios) from SEP or state authorities. Mexico has over 5,000 higher education institutions, including UNAM (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) — Latin America's largest university, Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM), and IPN (Instituto Politécnico Nacional).

Verification steps

  1. Check RVOE status — Verify the institution and program have RVOE. VerifyED includes RVOE-recognized Mexican institutions.
  2. SEP verification — SEP maintains an online RVOE database searchable by institution and program.
  3. Contact the institution — Mexican universities maintain registrar offices (Control Escolar) for verification.
  4. Apostille — Mexico is a Hague Convention member. Documents can be apostilled through SRE.

Key considerations

  • UNAM — Latin America's largest and one of its most prestigious universities.
  • RVOE is program-specific — An institution may have RVOE for some programs but not others. Verify the specific program.
  • Spanish-language credentials — All credentials are issued in Spanish.
